4 Issues That Could Disqualify You from Dental Implants

October 23, 2025

If you’re missing one or more teeth and are searching for a permanent restoration solution, dental implants may be the answer. Unfortunately, however, many patients don’t understand what makes a good candidate for treatment, or what could stop them from being one. Here’s a closer look at a few issues that could prevent you from getting dental implants if left untreated, and how you can resolve them and restore your beautiful smile!

Bone Loss

When you lose a permanent tooth, the space it leaves behind causes your jawbone to miss out on important stimulation that keeps it healthy and strong. As a result, it can deteriorate over time, eventually causing even more tooth loss. In some cases, it may become so badly damaged that it cannot support a dental implant, and a bone graft or sinus lift may be required to rebuild it. The great news is that following these procedures, there is frequently sufficient strength for prosthetics, and you can eventually restore your smile once you’ve healed.

Untreated Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss, and if left untreated can cause dental implant failure. Thus, before your dentist will even attempt dental implant surgery, your gums must be treated first. In fact, their health is essential for the survival of your dental implants. There is even a condition known as peri-implantitis that is very similar to gum disease and is one of the top two causes of dental implant failure, so ensuring that the soft tissue in your mouth is healthy prior to treatment is crucial.

Age

While there is truly no upper age limit to getting dental implants, it is possible to be too young. Because the jaw doesn’t finish growing until the teen years, it is important that patients be at least 18 years old to qualify for surgery.

Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions could complicate dental implant treatment. Uncontrolled diabetes can be especially harmful, as it not only increases your risk of gum disease, but it also can make the healing process take longer if you have fluctuating blood glucose levels. Furthermore, if you have cancer, a blood clotting disorder, or severe immune system problems, you may not qualify for this procedure. Still, none of these conditions automatically disqualify you. Just be sure to inform your dentist about them at your dental implant consultation and they will determine if treatment will be safe for you.

Remember, dental implants are the only permanent solution to lost teeth, but to receive treatment, you’ll need to qualify first. The great news is that in many cases even if you aren’t a good candidate initially, you can become one with the help of your dentist.
